Howard Behrens - 1933-present
Howard Behrens was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1933. He started drawing with crayons as a child, and as he says, "I just never stopped." He turned to painting while recovering from a broken leg at 17. After a trip to the west coast in 1976, he tried a palette knife instead of a brush to apply paints because he was never happy with the results from a brush. This technique made it easier for him to be free with the subject, so he has never used a paintbrush since. His first solo exhibition was in 1980 and he has not looked back. Behrens is a tireless traveler and his destinations are the subjects of his many paintings. Behrens is known for his romantic seascapes and breathtaking, but familiar, settings in the United States and Europe, particularly Italy and France.
He is known for dramatic, sunny settings with very deliberate, vivid images. He is an avid traveler and uses his digital camera to record images to be painted later in his studio at his home. His paintings are in galleries throughout the United States.« see less
