Carl Frederic Aagaard was born in Denmark in 1833. Aagaard left his small home town for Denmark's capital to study drawing at the Danish Royal Academy. The sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and the painter Eckersberg led an artistic renaissance during the Golden Age that produced, with the establishment of an academy in Charlottenborg in 1754, the artists Christen K?bke, Jens Juel, Constantin Hansen, Martinus R?rbye, J. Lundbye, Wilhelm Bendz, and Emanuel Larsen, among others. The Royal Collection, which was later to become the National Collection after the peaceful transition to a constitutional monarchy, actively supported these new artists, buying these modern pictures the moment they were exhibited. Aagaard was instructed by the country's great artists while at the Academy as he began his career towards the end of this great period in Denmark. In addition to studying drawing, Aagaard assisted at the professional studio of his older brother who was a glass engraver. Aagaard next apprenticed in the studio of Hilker, a painter and decorator. He collaborated with Hilker on work at the University and other public monuments. Aagard then was briefly associated with the painter Heinr Hansen, who was involved with decorating the chapel of King Christian IV. It was his final teacher though, the landscape painter Peter Kristian Skoovgaard, who was to be the most influential. In 1857 Aagaard exhibited for the first time to great success. He traveled throughout Switzerland and Italy where he perfected his style. Carl Frederic Aagaard died in Copenhagen in 1895.« see less
