Dennis Carney was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and spent his childhood surrounded by the colorful landscape of the desert. In conjunction with earning his degree, he participated in an intense study of ceramics under the tutelage of Elmer Taylor. He worked as an art director in Texas for seven years, then moved to Phoenix, Arizona to pursue fine art and developed an expressive style inspired in large part by his study with master ceramicist Peter Voulkus. The study of ceramics, in combination with the other artistic design talents involved in receiving his degree was later combined into his current style. Carney evokes a sense of construction in his work that reflects his background in design and ceramics. His architectural style combines with layering and molding techniques involved in working with clay. His paintings reflect a sense of progression and transformation combined with a delicate touch that leaves the viewer with a reminder of the continuous change and evolution that creates our reality. Carney's methodology is one of discarding and, in turn, reinventing the old to fashion something new and distinctive. These elements of erosion and change are always resident in Carney's work. Whether he is rendering wonderfully worn fragments of Greek or Roman architecture, the quietude of a Tuscan vineyard or an elegant room setting, his delicate hand calls to mind a classic quality in life. Thoughtful gradations of texture and color between the canvas and the surface fuse to cultivate a refined age to each piece. The subtle nuances of timeless imagery, poised tone and composed surface quality make for an overall impact of classical beauty with a distinctively modernized touch as Dennis Carney continues to reinvent.« see less
