Albert Bierstadt was born in D?sseldorf, Germany in 1830 of American parents and was brought to New Bedford, Massachusetts as a child. In 1851 Bierstadt began first with a series of sketches and drawings and then painting in oils when he reached his twenties. Bierstadt painted historical scenes and frontier genre and became the most prominent member of the nineteenth century school of heroic landscape. He received many awards for his pictorial skill and he soon became popular all over the world. In 1882, his atelier in New York was destroyed by fire and many of his paintings were lost.
