Joan Miro I Ferra was born April 20, 1893 in Barcelona, Spain, the son of a goldsmith and jewelry maker. He studied art at the Barcelona De Lonja School of Fine Arts and the Academia Gali. He was influenced early in his career by the Fauvism and Cubism movements with his first exhibition in 1920 at a gallery in Barcelona. In 1921 he settled in Paris where he met fellow artists Pablo Picasso, Andre

By 1930, Miro had developed his own unique style that was a combination of Catalan folk art, naïve childlike images, and fantasy, blending all into a collage of surrealistic art all his own. His interest in transforming objects into collages led him to surrealist sculptures. His art is rich in whimsical animal forms with a dreamlike quality and other objects that seemingly float through the air. Against a neutral background, his paintings are typically bright crayon-like primary colors, such as red, blue, green and yellow with black outlines.
He had moved back to Spain by the 1940s and experimented in other areas of art such as watercolors, lithographs, etchings, pastels, engraving and painting over copper. He held several one-man shows in the United States starting in 1947, including a retrospective of his art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Two ceramic murals, the Wall of the Moon and the Wall of the Sun at the UNESCO building in Paris were created in 1957 to 1959.
In 1956, Miro moved to an ultra-modern home in Palma de Mallorca designed by architect Josep Lluis Sert. In 1976 the Joan Miro Centre of Contemporary Art Study was opened and in 1979 he was awarded a Doctora Honoris Causa by the University of Barcelona. Miro died of heart disease on December 25, 1983 in his home in Palma de Mallorco at the age of 90. His home was turned into the Miro Museum in 1992 and his paintings and artwork can be seen there, as well as galleries and museums around the world.« see less
