Peter Poskas was born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1939. Poskas' earliest awareness of art came from magazine illustrations. He received his first set of oil paints when he was twelve and used these to copy George Durrie's idyllic winter scenes from the annual Travelers Insurance calendars. He attended Paier School of Art in New Haven, Connecticut and the University of Hartford in Hartford, Connecticut. Poskas initially pursued commercial art, his true interest lay with painting and he transferred to the Hartford Art School to begin formal training as a fine artist. The content, style, and structure of his work evolved slowly over the years as he explored different formats, materials and methods. Central to this process of discovery was his interest in small rural farms, a subject central to the bulk of his early works.
