Born June 8, 1922 in St. Paul, Minnesota, Leroy Neiman, began drawing at an early age. He left high school in 1942 to join the army, returning after four years to attend St. Paul Gallery and School of Art. In 1952, he begins exhibiting at the Twin Cities Show at Minneapolis School of Art and wins the Chicago Art Director's award. He continues to exhibit regularly in shows around the United States reaping rewards everywhere he goes. Neiman began an association with Playboy magazine in 1954 that he continues to this day, illustrating stories for the magazine. During the 1960s he produced more than one hundred paintings and murals for Playboy Clubs all over the world.
Neiman's style is abstract expressionism with bold dramatic colorful strokes that demand attention. He works in oil, enamel, watercolor, serigraphy, pastels, and other media. He is recognized worldwide as one of the most celebrated and popular sports and entertainment artists. Since 1970, Neiman has published hundreds of limited edition serigraphs and published many books. Many of the major sports figures, events and action of our time have been chronicled through his art. He has painted the Olympics, championship boxing, golf, horseracing, and all the famous people associated with the sports. Neiman has included singers, actors and ballerinas in his list of accomplishments, as well as the Super Bowl, jazz festivals and backdrops for Broadway plays.
Leroy Neiman has traveled and exhibited worldwide, but continues to live in New York with his wife of fifty years. His art can be seen in museums and galleries around the world including the Hermitage in Leningrad, Russia and the Bellas Artes in Caracas, Venezuela.
