Paul Klee 1879-1940
Paul Klee was born in Switzerland in 1879 to a German father who was a singing teacher and to a French Swiss mother who was a musician. Klee's early artistic training was in piano and violin, but in 1898 he chose to pursue painting as his career.

...see more »ngs. His early influences were Goya and Cezanne and a trip to Italy in 1901 led to a great admiration of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. From 1906 to 1933, Klee taught and lived in Germany, including work as an instructor at the Bauhaus and the Dusseldorf Academy. He was associated with the Blau Reiter group of artists known as "The Blue Four".
After he left Germany in 1933, the Nazis considered Klee's art degenerate and confiscated over 100 works of art.
Klee adapted his ideas to many different styles and genres, with prolific results in many mediums. He produced over 9000 works of art during his lifetime, with over 2600 pieces at the Klee Foundation in Berne, Switzerland. He was recognized as a famous artist from the 1920s on and used pencil, clack and white etchings, mosaics, dream imagery, watercolors, oils, and many other media to develop his ideas. His styles varied so greatly that he is mentioned in many different movements, from abstract to impressionist. Klee died in 1940.
