Steeply rising and plunging waves toss a fishing boat beneath a dark sky in Winslow Homer's well-known maritime painting entitled "Herring Net, 1885". One fisherman stands inside the small, wooden craft and gathers in the fish-laden net while another hangs well over the boat's far side. The oars stand crossed at the back of the boat, waiting for their time to be of use again, and a bright orange buoy floats in the foreground on the storm-tossed black, red and turquoise surface of the water. N.C.
