Kawase Hasui was an acknowledged master of woodblock printing and, in "Moon at Magome", that mastery shines forth. This simple line drawing of Japanese farmland at night is brought to vivid life with his expertise in the use of watercolors. Kawase Hasui was declared a national living treasure before his death in 1957 and was one of the most famous members of the shin hanga group, who were dedicated to incorporating western elements in their art work without losing the traditional Japanese woodblock techniques.
