A lavender-clouded baby blue sky stretches over a dark blue ocean and its white sand beach in Jose Barbera's "Costa del Sol II". Two small fishing boats sit at angles end-to-end on the sand next to nearly motionless water. The boats cast brown shadows the same color as the caramel line of wet sand in the painting's foreground that reveals this beach to be a peninsula. That foreground shadow shows thick layers of paint that appear to have been scraped from a blade, but in every other detail, the painting maintains all the realism of a photograph.
