Two black musicians are painted against a bright red background to ultimate dramatic effect in Romare Bearden's painting, "The Last of the Blue Devils". The objects that share their red space are the black and white of the black grand piano at which one of them sits, the white saxophone with black shadows the other one plays, and a floating white circle with the image of a blue devil's face in it at the upper right of the canvas. Their shapes are simple and bright, their eyes white against their black faces, and the folds in their bright blue suits painted red to further point up the contrast. It captures a moment and a mood in the history of black music, and does so in singular style."
