Three ducks gather around large rocks at the edge of a lake in this painting from John James Audubon entitled "Canvasback Duck". The world-renowned painter and naturalist captures their every detail, taking care to distinguish the patterns in their feathers, the characteristics of their pale gray or white webbed feet, and the look of their eyes and faces, just as they would look in the wild. Two of the ducks have write feet and golden-brown heads and necks, one of them standing on a rock, and the other in the water. The third stands on another rock opposite the first, and is painted in shades of gray, head and tail dark and body and feet pale. Delicate waves and tufts of long grass give the birds their surroundings, and a white sky lets them remain the painting's dominant focus.
