A wide canvas is crowded with brick and brownstone apartment buildings in "The Block" by Justin Bua. Pipes, chimneys, clotheslines and the metal implements of utilities crowd the rooftops until they swell and lean. The sunlight accentuates the crumpled and sagging appearance of the rest of the buildings on the street. Mortar and concrete stoops tilt and create funny angles under crooked windows. Warm lights shine from the windows to harmonize with the gold that colors the smoggy air behind them.
